Kovarts, the inclusive “Arts for All” fun learning space in Kovan Hub, has started two subsidised fun activities for seniors in the Kovan-Paya Lebar area.
The two workshops are presented in collaboration with People Association’s Kovan Paya Lebar Community Club, and Paya Lebar Citizens’ Consultative Committee, Paya Lebar Active Ageing Committee. They are targeted at residents 50 years old and above.
The fully-subsidised “Active Ageing through Music and Movement” Workshop on Tuesdays was launched on 7 March 2023. Participants learn drumming, connecting the mind to their hands, and singing oldies from their diaphragm, with close guidance from professionals.
Stretching and sustaining movements while drumming and singing during the workshop help to strengthen both mind and body. Singing golden oldies such as You are My Sunshine, Top of the World and evergreens such as “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin” and “Burong-Kakak-Tua” is not only fun, but invigorating as well. More importantly, it helps the seniors to break all barriers and forge new friendships too.
One participant commented, “at first I find it confusing… after a while I feel my brains are working. I have to connect the music and rhythm to my hands…”

La Kopi Art on Thursdays gives seniors the opportunity to express their creativity through different art mediums such as water colour painting and pastel drawing while enjoying a cup of coffee and some snacks.
This partially-subsidised workshop is a great way for seniors to socialise and make more friends, while picking up some art techniques. It’s a great opportunity to work the brain, stretch the imagination and unleash hidden artistic talent.
Participants pay only $5/-. They may bring back their works of art to adorn their homes. New mediums will be taught in the coming months, and seniors can look forward to creating a collection of their artistic pride.
There’s never a dull moment at these workshops where the seniors can enjoy inter-mingling, joy and laughter. Come join in and unleash your hidden talent in art and music.
These subsidised programmes are part of Kovarts’ contribution to the long-term social, mental, and physical well-being of our communities. The activities are recognised for their therapeutic benefits, including helping seniors to age actively, gracefully and meaningfully.
